The nights are long and the days are cold – it’s the time of year when Arkle Theatre gathers to remember the year just gone and look to the plays ahead.

And what a turn out there was in Casa Mackean this year! Actors, audience, directors, prompts, and technicians all came together to congratulate one another on a fantastic year of theatre and to find out what’s in store in 2024.

Spring 2024

Performances: 24th – 27th April

Cyrano de Bergerac adapted by Glyn Maxwell,
directed by Phil Barnes

Comedy / 7f, 5m

Swordsman, Philosopher, Poet, Raconteur Cyrano de Bergerac is all these things, but none of them makes him happy. What he desires above all is the love of the beautiful Roxane. But his problem is as plain as the nose on his face. Surely he is too ugly ever to be loved?

Auditions for Cyrano de Bergerac will be announced shortly and will take place in early January 2024.

Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2024

Performances: 12th – 17th August

Around the World in 80 Days adapted by Laura Eason,
directed by Jenny Tamplin

Drama / 3f, 5m, doubling

The fabulously wealthy Victorian gentleman Phileas Fogg wagers his life’s fortune that he can circumnavigate the globe in just eighty days. Along with his hapless valet Passepartout, he sets out on a dazzling escapade that takes him from the misty alleys of London to the exotic subcontinent and on to the Wild West as they race against the clock on a dizzying succession of trains, steamers, a wind-propelled sledge and an elephant.

How I Learned to Drive by Paula Vogel,
directed by Hannah Fitzpatrick

Drama / Ages 20 – 70

Paula Vogel’s How I Learned to Drive is a Lolita-like tale of female sexual awakening under the watchful eye – and hands – of a largely sympathetic ‘uncle’. It was premiered off-Broadway in March 1997, and went on to win the 1998 Pulitzer Prize.

2024 will be Arkle Theatre’s penultimate season, and what it year it is shaping up to be! Make sure to keep an eye on the website and Arkle Facebook page for audition news and updates.

Have a wonderful Christmas, and we’ll see you in the New Year!

Hello Rob. Hopefully you remember me from The Shrew…I’m looking to act again. Like the sound of all three of your productions next year. Would you mind letting me know about auditions if there are any roles you think I might be suitable for please? Best, Dougie.
